Thank you for joining this session and exploring how TikTok works. We covered the basics of setting up your account, navigating the platform, and engaging with videos and creators. Here are some key points to help you continue exploring confidently.

Key Takeaways and Next Steps

Getting Started

Download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. You can browse videos without an account, but creating one lets you post, comment, and interact. Use your phone number, email, or existing accounts like Google or Facebook to sign up.

Personalizing Your Experience

The algorithm suggests videos based on what you like, comment on, and search for. Use the “For You” page to discover new content and the “Following” page to keep up with accounts you follow. If you see something you don’t like, hold down the video and select “Not Interested.”

Creating a Profile

Add a photo or short video, write a short bio, and choose a unique username. You can link your other social media accounts like Instagram or YouTube for more connections.

Engaging with Videos

Tap the heart to “like,” leave comments, share videos with others, or save them into collections for easy access later. You can also follow favorite creators to see more of their content.

Making Your Own Videos

Tap the plus sign to record. Choose from 15 seconds, 60 seconds, or 3 minutes. Add filters, text, stickers, and music from TikTok’s large free music library. Before posting, check your privacy settings to decide who can see or comment on your video.

Exploring More

Use the magnifying glass to search for topics or hashtags. Check the “Discover” tab for trending hashtags, sounds, or challenges. You can even join fun community challenges or watch live streams to interact with creators in real time.

About social media and younger generations:

Social media users across generations are drawn to visual content such as images and videos.
As a whole, younger generations such as Generation Zers (ages 13-17), millennials (ages 18-34), and Generation Xers (ages 35-54) use social media more frequently than baby boomers (ages 55+).
Young people are also more exposed via social media to important world events and issues that affect society today.
Social media even has a role to play in networking and career enhancement, with sites like LinkedIn helping young people to find employment opportunities and ways of making money.
